It's always interesting finding out what can happen when a bingo habit gets out of control. One of our favourite stories involves a grandmother whose passion for bingo saw her turn to dope dealing to fund her obsession.
Two years ago Leticia Garcia was nabbed by cops with over around 100kg of marijuana in the trunk of her car. Garcia attempted to convince the cops that the massive stash was planted in her car, and that she was simply on her way to the local bingo hall to indulge her bingo habit.
“I never, never had any knowledge of that car being loaded when I went to Tucson,” Garcia told Cochise County Superior Court Judge Wallace Hoggatt.
Garcia argued that the car she had been borrowed by a distant relative the day before with the intention of using her as a mule. She also claimed to be an ace bingo player who frequently won thousands of dollars at a sitting.
Unfortunately, the judge didn't buy her story, and sent Garcia to the jail for 4 years.
"The underlying issue is that she’s got a bingo problem, which explains why an otherwise nice person might get sucked into something like this,” the state prosecutor Doyle Johnstun explained to the jury.
